Every year, thousands of women and men walk out of correctional facilities and back in the world that expects them to move on. Their sentences have been served. Their debt to society is paid. But behind the relieved exhale of freedom is a woman or man carrying wounds that no release date can heal - wounds rooted in shame, identity loss, isolation and trauma - the quiet devastation of being forgotten and not seen.
More specifically, the woman that served in a Federal Institution coming home to Virginia is an invisible population. They are invisible because there is no data collected on them and they more time than not, have to return to other cities like DC.
In addition to not being counted, there are no resources because most community based organizations indicate they can't provide help because the women are federal.
CSPEAKS sees these women and will stand in the gap until our legislators are able to provide women-centered support and funding and not an afterthought to the men's resources.

Before Ms Carla started helping women, she ran a men's supportive housing program where I stayed. I served 33 years and 8 months, she not only helped me through the program but she made sure that I had all the skills, especially financial knowledge to live successfully on my own. The Lifeline Program is a federal program that provides eligible households a monthly discount of $9.25 for either home internet, landline phone or cellphone service.
How are is the program funded? Telecommunication carriers, not government taxes, support Universal Service Fund. Telecommunications companies contribute a perecentage of their interstate/international revenue to USF.
